Ohio Hi-Point has been a good experience for me thus far because it allows me an opportunity to learn differently than I would at my home school. In our classrooms we get hands-on learning, and are able to actually put what we learn into practice. It’s preparing me for a career, so I don’t feel like I’m wasting time with something I will never use. One of the things I love about my lab in particular is that I can explore different aspects of something that I’m interested in (technology), and kind of decide from there where my talents fit best into that broad field. For me, it’s combining communication, technology, and art to get Digital Media. But not only do I get the opportunity to decide that before I get to college (so I don’t have to switch my major 6 times to figure out what I like), but the other benefit is that I’m getting credits in other areas of technology that might count toward my general education electives requirements in college, and I’m also getting certifications that can help me in the future to secure a job until that perfect opportunity for a job I’d like to keep until I retire comes along.

As the year starts to draw to an end there are a lot of things going on. Finally, last week, we finished our senior projects, which I just happened to rock, and that was a giant weight lifted off of my chest. Then the very next day we were rewarded with a trip to Kings Island for the math and science day through my college math class. Every time we get past a task like the senior project or go on a trip like Kings Island it signifies a step-by-step process that is getting us to the end of the year, and that brings a giant mixture of emotions.
I’m excited to graduate and get to go to college, but at the same time I’m thinking where did my last twelve years of school go, how did graduation come so fast, and I just wonder and hope that I can make it in the college life. So I would appreciate all of your best wishes and any of the good luck that you can spare, so until next time, stay real.
Class at OHP is different than how classes were at Bellefontaine High School. A lot of schools now are doing block scheduling which is like 90 minute periods! At OHP you have your lab for approximately 2 and ½ hours each day and our academics run 40 minutes long each class, and you take 3 academic classes each semester. My classes I started out in the beginning of the year I still am in, and that goes for most everyone unless they decide to switch out of a class for whatever reason. Class work is just as important as lab work because you have to pass everything in order to be able to attend Convocation at the end of your senior year!
In the class room, the work is a little bit different than my home school because we do a lot on our laptops! We gather research, study a subject, and create projects using our computers instead of textbooks. Some classes still have textbooks, but it’s rare that you are assigned a book and have to carry it with you everyday to class and home!
Everyone has access to this online management system called Angel, which all of our academic teachers post what we are doing in class, homework, quizzes, tests, etc., which is pretty sweet because if you’re absent you can log in at home or from whereever and see what you missed, do the work and submit it to be graded. It’s an easy way to see what you missed while you were absent from class if you’re gone with your lab on a field trip or if you are privileged enough to be a lead ambassador and are gone with Miss Spain.
Academics are important at OHP,too!! We are awarded honor roll and merit roll just like home schools do, and Hi-Point has incentive days for perfect attendance. This year we went bowling and had a movie shown in a room off of the cafeteria on a big screen with snacks and refreshments! Not to mention if you keep your grades up and have perfect attendance you can receive your laptop for free at the end of your senior year so you can use it for college! Teachers at OHP do care about whether you are understanding the material and there is also a class called intervention where you can go for extra help, a quiet study, or be assigned to if you have missing work! The teachers in intervention are there to help you, and you’re not sent there for punishment, it’s because your teacher wants you to get your grades up so you can pass their class!

Hi guys, so have you ever had to take notes and you got behind? Have you ever forgot a pencil and you couldn’t take notes because of it? At Hi-Point all of us have laptop computers. Not only do we use the computers in lab to do our lab work, but we also use them in academic classes, as well. In academic classes we read the books, take notes and e-mail assignments. We use these computers almost every day in class. The teacher puts the notes on the projector and we type them up. No more carrying around heavy textbooks that weigh your book bag down. Your laptop is used to learn everything.
I’m back yet again! Everything at OHP has been going really good. I have finished Macbeth in my English class. We were supposed to have a test, but that hasn’t happened yet becuse of all the snow days.
My new class for the semester is called Success for College. This class is an online class through Owens Community College. We learn skills to help us succeed in college, prep for the ACT, and choose the right college for us. It is brand NEW this year at OHP. So far we have learned things about study skills.
In my government class we are studying civil rights. Ms. Oelker has just given us a huge assignment that will help us learn more aout the civil rights and all the events and importance of them, too.
Math…well is math.
It has been going well we just learned about….well i dont know what it is called..but you get to create the formula for a something or other.
Business Administration Lab has been great! I just learned two weeks ago that I get to go to state for competition!! I won first place in two of the three competitions I was in. I get to go to state for Advance Spreadsheet Applications. The other compeition was Administrative Support Concepts. I placed first in that with over 70 people and it came down to how fast me and someone else took the test! I was so excited when I found out!!!
I’m sad that it’s my last year, but hey, I get to go out with a bang in BPA (Business Professionals of America) Region 16!
We have been working on starting medical coding in lab along with filing. We always have something to do. So far this month has been great! Between the snow days and all the good stuff happening…I hope it only gets better.
That’s it for this blog, but i’ll write again soon!
Hey guys I’m back again after what seems like a while…..
Well, this year is flying by!! it is already time for 8th grade tours. I just had my first tour yesterday. it was a group from Kenton. They were pretty quiet for the most part, but man did they ask good questions when they had them. They seemed really ready to learn all about our wonderful programs and their benefits. We started at Cosmetology and slowly worked our way through all of the programs. Several students were glad to see the different labs. I think we may have another guy possibly interested in Cosmetology, which is really good because some people think some labs are just for the girls or just for the boys. That’s not the case at all!! We have guys in Cosmetology and even Health Technology! There are girls in the Auto Labs like Diesel Technology and Auto Collision, too. Everyone can go for whatever they are interested in.
We’ve been working hard at OHP. We are finishing up our senior papers before break and summing up the little tidbits of our academics. In my English class we’re finishing our papers and King Arthur. We have done quite a bit. We just finished watching the movie! In personal finance we’re working on the facts about credit cards and debit cards. We are learning how to properly use them and avoid the risk of identity theft. Government is moving right along. We are learning how we can run for president. I might just decide to be president one day. That’s everyone’s dream right? Math is all about parabolas. These are those u-shaped graph “things.” We are doing something called “completing the square.” This is where we change it from one format of equation to another so we can find the vertex. Overall, its pretty difficult.
Lab is something new all the time. We’re all ready for CHRISTMAS VACATION!!!! We can’t wait. We have planned a dinner and fun day for the last day before break. We’re planning on watching a Christmas movie and having a good lunch of homemade foods and a gift exchange. I got a fellow student in my lab. I hope i can find her something good. Well that sums everything up until next time…….
My academic classes at OHP are pretty much the same as at my home school, Bellefontaine. Some are challenging and some are easy, but yet you know you’re still learning and achieving something. My classes this year at OHP are: college math, which has a long story behind it. It’s one of my easier classes. I was supposed to be in calculus, but since only two morning lab students qualified for the class, we had to be dropped to the next math class. I also take U.S. government, anatomy & physiology, and CP English. Hi-Point offers all college prep and honors classes that are offered in most home schools or even more. I feel my academics are a challenge, but I know they will benefit me greatly later in life.
G’day G’day fans
I canNOT believe its November! Like everyone has always told me that senior year will go by soooo quickly, and I’m like “Yeahhh, right.” But, for real, this year is flying by! I’m trying to sound all happy while writing this blog, but I’m pretty upset. It was snowing this morning (it snowed hard in Bellefontaine earlier this week!)– boohoo. I hate snow! Anyways, I hope everything has been great in your guys’ lives.
A lot of sophomores that I go to schools and talk to think that they have no choice in the academic classes here at OHP. If you choose to come to Ohio Hi-Point, you will have a meeting with your counselor at your home school, and he or she will help you schedule your classes. We have many, many choices at OHP. I take all college prep classes. I have CP English first period. Then I move on to Street Law second period. Then to physics and college math.
Teachers are very willing to help all students with their classes. If any student gets below a “D” in any class, they are sent to get help and bring that grade up. No one is a failure at OHP. The teachers push us way too hard, which is a good thing! Have a great weekend everyone. See ya later : )
WOW! The last two weeks have been quite stressful for me. We’ve been at clinicals all week this week. But thankfully our academic teachers are very understanding, and not rushing our work to be completely done. For the past two years I’ve loved OHP’s academics more than my home school. The teachers are more one on one and more understanding than the ones I used to have. The classes aren’t that full of students, which helps me especially to learn all I can.
My four academics I’m taking this year are college math, honors English, psychology, and dual enrollment anatomy and physiology. College math is a semi-tough class, meaning once the information is taught, it sometimes takes a few days to understand and comprehend the math, but once I caught on to the information it was much easier. Honors English has a lot of reading and writing blogs. There’s few assignments in this class because the majority of our time is writing different blogs and discussing what we’ve read. This class is tough. There’s a lot of reading between the lines in the stories we’ve read that are sometimes hard to find right away. That’s where our discussions help.
Psychology is a class where as long as you pay attention, it’s pretty easy. Granted some of the tests are complicated, it’s an interesting class. I personally love learning about things that affect personality and such, though, so it may just be me that finds this class easy to be in. Then I have dual enrollment A and P. Dual enrollment means that as long as I’m passing this class, it’s a college credit I won’t have to take at college since I’m taking it now. I enjoy this class a lot. It’s a more of your own pace type of class. We’re given the assignments and quizzes that need to be finished by a certain date. In between receiving the start date and due date, Mrs. Dearth gives mini-lessons to help students understand the sections they aren’t catching on to. I’ve been given a few mini lessons, and each and every time, they’ve helped. Only having four academics, and lab is great. I feel all my classes are preparing me for my nursing career.
Hello faithful blog readers! It’s nice to be able to write to you all once again. I’m having a pretty stressful year so far right now. I’m working on a getting a community service project running in my lab, we’re starting a fundraiser soon, and on top of it all I go to clinical this week and have my state test for my nursing assistant license coming up in a couple weeks.
Oh yea, and I forgot to mention that I have a ten-page paper due this Friday for my senior project! Go me! But on top of all of this I’m working hard on my academic classes at OHP. You’ve got to love the teachers at this school for how understanding they are. They are so willing to help you in any way possible and always try their hardest to make sure you are excelling and learning everything you need to be successful in life.
When I was first thinking about going to OHP one of my worries was that I wouldn’t be able to get the right academic classes to keep me on my academic path that I was getting at my home school. Boy did I soon find out that I was wrong! When I started my classes at Hi-Point I realized that they are no different than what you could take at your home school. I’m in honors English, college math, dual enrollment anatomy and physiology and government, which are all good classes for a student on a pathway to college, so when someone is worried about not being able to get the academic classes that they would need if they attended Hi-Point they can rest easy knowing that the teachers and classes at OHP are going to provide them with everything they will need to be successful in life.
