Senior Project

So Senior Projects, we all (assuming you’re an Ohio Hi-Point Senior) have one. Mine is on the effectiveness and positive aspects of online communication and interactions. Now I know it kind of sounds boring but that’s okay, I found it interesting and that’s what matters (: Really I am trying to prove that not all online social media channels and communications (forums, and school based pages) are bad. Most people when they think social media think “Oh, Facebook!” Well, yes and no. Social media is anything that can be commented on, rated, etc.

I found it a truly interesting topic and as you can see I worked hard on the paper, using my notecards and floor hehe. The notecards are actually facts about my paper’s topic. When you become a senior here at OHP you are required, based on which English class your in, to turn in a certain number of notecards to your teacher by a set date. These cards will help put facts and sources into your paper. It’s a lot of work but the payoff is great. I learned so much about online interaction and how to make a good web page.

And with that I better go (:

Until Next Time!

Career Preview Night and Taste of the Future

Ohio Hi-Point’s Annual Taste of the Future is very important to the community and is very fun. Last year was a blast. There was a lot of local restaurants who showcased their food for students and parents to enjoy and colleges were also there to speak to people. It is also a great day for Hi-Point because the labs get to show off some of their activities and things that are going on. You should really try to attend this event because it is really big and last year there were around 600 people that attended and they were just people around the community and it was put together very well.   http://www.ohiohipoint.com/events/62.html You should really consider coming to this once a year event because you will really enjoy it. Come back in a couple weeks and we will have more information on this important day.

As Of Last Week

Last week was so busy, hence my being late with posting. Anyway! I’ll just jump right in and point out a few highlights to the last week of September. There really was nothing super exciting Monday, I just had normal classes, so I will start with Tuesday.

Tuesday- I went to a Job Fair in Marysville. That was so cool! Myself, Tommie, Anthony, Alley, and Seth, -all lead ambassadors- went and helped with this Job Fair. While we were there we gained the opportunity to talk to possible future employers. Everyone that I talked to were very informative and it was great experience getting out there to see what kind of jobs are available.

Wednesday- J.T., Michael and I -Business Professionals of America Regional Representatives- had our Regional Officer Training Seminars. We met up with 18 other students from local BPA chapters for Region 16. They all were nice and I had a great time. We did some getting to know you/ice breakers and listened to some great speakers.

Thursday- During the day I had regular classes and then headed to work. After work a close friend of mine and myself went to the park, in the rain. We thought we’d just sit in the shelter house but ended up taking pictures outside instead :)

I also went to the OHP Board meeting for September where I was honored as Student Of The Month. :)

Friday- It was the first Blood Drive of the year. And that is how I ended my school week :)

Until next time,

Alex

Taking Advantage of the Opportunities at Hi-Point

Hope everyone has been enjoying all the blogs we have all been posting. Just recentley I have been looking at maybe doing an internship. This is something very beneficial we can do here at Hi Point. It gives you the chance to start working  in the field that you want and you can make pretty good money. I am looking at an internship with the Perry corp. I think it would be pretty cool to be able to do this because you are able to learn a lot from working with these people.

Skills USA is also something that I am focusing on because I am running for regional office and its going to be some fun. If I win I will be going to Washington D.C. We get to go for free and get spending money so hopefully I can win and have some fun.  All these things are possible when you come to Hi Point.

Closing the door on high school!

As my final month of my high school career comes to a close I begin to ponder many questions. One thing I often question is where I would be today without Ohio Hi-Point? I wouldn’t be serving the Future Educators Association, I wouldn’t have the chance to obtain college credit nor would I have the opportunities they have presented me. Becoming a teacher is something I have pursued for the past four years and have actively taken measures to become prepared for what awaits. I have known for some time the career path which I wanted to take and have been very dedicated to getting there. My career goals include obtaining a professional teaching license and a job in field of Agriculture Education. Later, I wish to obtain my masters degree in education and continue my coursework to receive my principal license. Ultimately, I wish to get my doctorate, and become a school superintendent, University Dean or President. The vast study of education and deciding which area to major in was simple; Agriculture and Extension Education is a study which I could excel within and begin to achieve my long term goals.

Without Ohio Hi-Point I couldn’t possess such confidence going into college. My background, knowledge, and understanding of agriculture compel me into this career path. With every one in six people employed by agriculture, there are several alternatives that I could pursue with this degree. Those include working directly in the classroom with students, or with the local farmers in the OSU Extension Office working as an educator. I’m so thankful for the opportunities I have been presented and I’m excited to begin the next chapter of my life in the fall of 2011.

Shadowing the Superintendent

A month ago a unique opportunity came about for me. My lab teacher (Mrs. Fletcher) suggested the opportunity to work closely with Ohio Hi-Point’s finest administration member, Mrs. Kim Davis, the superintendent of Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.  Being eager to accept any educational opportunity presented to myself I quickly agreed! The chance to experience the work of an administration member is unique and usually isn’t easy to secure due to confidentiality concerns which students are not part of. On my day with Mrs., Davis I reviewed the work of superintendent in preparation of a school board meeting which was being held later in the evening. She walked me through the review process making sure that the data she and her staff members submitted was accurately represented within the board members agendas.  One of the most unique things about OHP board members is that their meeting agendas are presented to them on their iPads provided by the school. Members receive the most up to date agenda the day of their meeting, and then follow  along using the technology! She explained it as a conserving measure which saves personal from running copies and wasting paper to print lengthy agendas and supporting documents.
Not only was this chance to job shadow eye opening it was inspiring, I gathered insight from one of the hardest working superintendents I have had the pleasure to meet and get to know. Knowing I want to become a superintendent one day, Mrs. Davis has inspired me to work even harder and dedicate myself to the world of education. I am very thankful for this opportunity!

Making the decision about Ohio Hi-Point

Okay, I know some people already know what they want to do for the rest of their lives and others really don’t know yet.  I understand because I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to go into the health field.  I knew it was in my top three choices.  My other choices were something in engineering and printing and graphics.
So my parents and I took a tour of Ohio Hi-Point.  I went to the printing and graphics lab first and thought it was okay but maybe that’s really not what I was interested in then I went to the health tech lab and was amazed with all the equipment and real life hospital environment I was in.  It just felt right.
I know not all parents are supportive of this school, and at first mine weren’t. It was like pulling teeth to get them both to come and consider me coming here.  They definitely changed their minds and they are so supportive now and tell other parents of how far along I have came since my sophomore year.
Coming to Ohio Hi-Point was the best thing that has happened to me.  It is one step closer to my goals for my future.
If you are considering coming to Ohio Hi-Point and still have questions just let any of us know. :)
