College Plans And Other Things

Just a quick blurb about what I plan on doing after high school. My goals for after graduation is working a full time job this summer and then attending Marion Technical College in the fall for Interactive Media.  Someday I hope to have a job creating and designing websites and possibly doing something with photography/promotional advertising. I will be commuting to college because they don’t have dorms but it will still be a fun experience for me.

College Visit

This past weekend a friend of mine invited me to go visit her brother at Bethel College in Indiana. While there I got to see the campus and talk to several students about their college life. It was really cool to stay in the dorms and get a feel of how things were. We also went to a musical that Bethel’s Collegians put on the Friday night we were there.

On Saturday we woke up late went out to a local restaurant right on the edge of  the campus. Tradewinds was the name and they have the best waffles ever! We went then back to the dorms hung out and met people for lunch. Instead of going to lunch we just went to the park which isn’t that far from the college. Over all it was an awesome trip and I hope to visit again!

Elizabeth and I walking around campus

Everyone walking to the park! :D

All of us at Krispy Kreme’s before Abigail and I went home.

Clark State: College Experience with Mr. Heighton

Like I have said in my other blogs, Hi-Point provides endless opportunities for students that will greatly benefit them. Right now, I am taking a class on computer maintenance and super computers at Springfield. This is another perfect example of the opportunities that are provided. It’s semester credits and I’ve gotten a big discount because of Hi Point. We are pretty much getting a head start on the college experience. The professor is crazy and super funny. It is something that we travel to on three different Fridays during school and do this class. I have been having a lot of fun doing all of these extra classes and competitions because it makes my name more familiar to people and can help me in finding a good job.

This was just a short blog because we only have went one day so far. In the next few weeks there will be more info on this class and the fun times that we are having. Enjoy the blogs and if you have any questions, just ask!

College Tours: the insight from me!

Hey everyone!

So this week I am going to tell you guys about some college visits that I took and what the outcome was. I started out at OSU Lima, beautiful campus and close to home. I have tons of pictures from this visit to share.

Well OSU was beautiful and close to home but it also provides the major I am interesting in taking. I really want to be a teacher in language arts. I can achieve this goal at OSU and that means a lot to me because my family is from Logan County and I really would like to stay close to home. But the coolest thing about OSU was the buckeye card. This is like a student I.D., but it also holds money for you like a debit card. You can use it on campus and at local retail stores and restaurants. I went on the tour with my mom and of course she is a BIG buckeye fan and she was so excited the whole time. So she is all for me becoming an buckeye but she is also listening to what I want and that means a lot to me.

Okay so back to the tour, we got to see all the buildings and talk to students and to the guidance consoler. They all were so helpful and patient with me stopping to take pictures. I also loved the atmosphere of the campus. Everyone seemed to be having fun and enjoying themselves. I didn’t know what to except when I went to this college tour but I can say I left very happy. At the end of my tour, my mom and I were driving off campus when we look over and see a rainbow! It wasn’t just any rainbow, it was a double rainbow, my mom swears that this was a sign that I am supposed to be a Buckeye. Don’t forget to look at the pictures that I took and for the double rainbow!

The next college tour I went to was at Cleveland State University. The campus was in the heart of downtown Cleveland. So I wasn’t too thrilled about that but it was very beautiful. The campus was really big and at the time it was one of the big college tours. I am guessing that there was over 200 people there to take the tour. So this was a little downfall for me. I had a lot of questions and wanted to take pictures but with all the people and the big touring groups it was very hard to do. So I sadly do not have any pictures from Cleveland state. Cleveland state is about three and a half hours away from home, so I’m leaning away from that. Cleveland state offer’s everything that I am looking for and more but I can’t stand to be away from my family like that.

So I have decided to apply to OSU. I have not decided to apply for any other school yet but I have faith in my self that I will succeeded at OSU and still have everything that I want. So please wish me good luck and best of wishes with the outcome of OSU.

The next chapter in the life of Shelby :)

Earlier this month I went to visit the Ohio State University, Lima branch, and have decided to attend there in the fall! (Keep in mind this is probably my 512,128th plan for college! lol!) I made this choice based on the fact that OSU-Lima, being part of The Ohio State University, offers a wide range of majors, including my current intended major, marketing! Also, the degree will be from a well-known school, and attending the branch campus seemed like a great option for me in particular because of the financial side of things. And with my major I can continue to save money going to Lima for up to 3 years, or switch to main campus as long as I have a 2.0 GPA (on a 5.0 scale :) )!  So anyone out there with college decisions in their future, keep in mind everything you have to consider! :)

Also, I found a campus job I want already! (A little premature, I know, but I’m a planner, what can I say? haha) They have students that they pay to be Student Ambassadors, who give campus tours and answer admissions questions for prospective students! How cool is that? Sound familiar? I do that for Ohio Hi-Point already, which makes me totally qualified for that job! :) (As it turns out, extra-curricular activities do pay off!) I love being a blogger and an ambassador at Ohio Hi-Point, so I’m very happy for the potential opportunity to continue similar things in college to earn my extra money! AND they work around your class schedule and want your studies to come first, so asking off is never a problem if you’re having trouble keeping up with your studies! I love it!

Anyway, I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I am sooo happy to have my plans be more concrete! Going through the college choosing experience has really made me VERY thankful for what Ohio Hi-Point is doing and has done to prepare me for my next steps! So that begs the question, what can they do for you? You’ll have to check that out for yourself, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask me on our Hi-Point Journeys Facebook Page! :)

Until next time!
Shelby :)

Getting Ready for College

Many seniors have been very busy with the end of the year school, but also with getting ready for college in the fall. Some are just applying and others are picking which college they want to attend. This can be so stressful. For me I was stuck between different schools which were both good and both had everything I need for my RN program.  For people who were stuck in my shoes a couple months ago just relax, here are some things that could help you make that big decision. First go visit the school. Go with you parents and take a look at the classrooms and labs, see if it’s want you are looking for. Then see what the passing rate is. This can tell you how good the teaching is the higher the percent the better the teaching and hands on the program has. If you are wanting to go to a two year school then make sure the credits you get will be accepted when you transfer to the university you pick.  You can also look at cost and see which is finical more fit for you, and what is fit for your living situation.

Seniors should also be thinking about scholarships if you’re not already. I know it is a hassle to fill out papers and write essay after essay but I know every little bit will help it. Besides who wants to be completely in debt when you leave school and have to work twice as hard to pay them off, when you could have written a couple essay which is much easier. So my advise is to take some time and fill them out.

So for all the seniors who have been stressing out over college you still have time so relax. Get your papers for the school filled out like FASFA and fill out some scholarships and just be calm everything will fall into place and work out.

Senior Year

Hey guys! Happy New Year! Since getting back from break I can honestly say I’m so ready to graduate. It’s like school is honestly ready to be over. I’m ready to get out there and start college at Urbana University, which I have been accepted to already! I was so excited when I got that call. I will be majoring in Athletic Training, and I hopefully will be on the college’s bowling team. That might be part of the reason I’m ready to get out of here! haha. But other than that, school has been pretty good. Finished up exams last week, and found out I got a 100 on my senior paper! Let me tell you nothing is scarier than waiting to see your grade on that! But honestly if I had the chance to go back to the beginning of my junior year, and tell myself anything, it would be to relax a little bit more, and not stress out so much. And to study because once you hit senior year you’re going to need it. I’d also tell myself to enjoy junior year, because there will come a point when you’re gonna miss it when its all said and done.

Just to inform you guys, as well, we bloggers are trying something new this year with our Facebook page. Each week until the end of school one of us will be on Facebook to answer any questions you may have about OHP! Please don’t be afraid to ask us, we are all really cool, and are willing to help you guys at anytime.

Well I do believe that’s all I have for this one. Later guys!

Mer(:

What career-technicial education means to me.

Career-Technical Education has become more meaningful to me as I have been going through school here at Ohio Hi-Point Career Center.  What I mean by this is that when I first started going to school here I thought that this was just another way of saying free college credit.  However, it is much more than just free college credit.  One way it is more of a meaning to me is that it puts me in position in getting a better educational opportunity in what I want to learn.  What I mean by this is that there are just so many things that I have been able to accomplish while in a Career-Technical Education school.

One thing that I have been able to accomplish is having the ability to compete in competitions in Ohio to help better my knowledge in my career field.  Another meaning to me about Career-Technical Education is that I am able to earn college and high school credit at the same time.  This helps me to save money and also get the same if not better education that I would get at my home school.  However, while going through school here you must get your own understanding of what you want it to be.  Finding this out will better your education while having a fun and interesting understanding of what this will mean to you.
