Sophomore career days, and Taste of the Future!

Hello everyone! I hope you all have had a wonderful week so far, besides the fact that it is starting to feel like fall finally!! Despite the weather, OHP was very busy this week getting prepared for sophomore career days. From Monday to Wednesday, the cosmetology lab was frantically getting everything together. We all had a job to do, and we accomplished it. I was also working with Lead Ambassadors on getting everything prepared for the students. I helped out Lead Ambassadors on Thursday by giving teachers and guidance counselors tours of all the different labs that we have to offer. On Friday, I helped out in my lab by engaging the students in the different stations that we had set up.

For those of you who do not know about sophomore career days, I will tell you about them. Sophomore career days is when the sophomores from our 14 partner schools come to OHP to see what labs they would consider being a part of in their junior and senior years of high school. We had many students that were interested in attending, so that is good news for us!I have a couple pictures of students that helped out with the cosmetology lab, and I have a video of an afternoon session that we had. So if you were not able to see the cosmetology lab today, you will at least be able to see a part of it! Speaking of future students, we hope the sophomores heard us when we said, ” We hope to see you on the 17th!” because this Thursday will be the Taste of the Future!

Taste of the future will be hosting different colleges and restaurants from around the area. This will also be the time to check out the lab that you are interested in and get a more one on one experience with a lab instructor and have your questions answered. It is a great event, and I hope that I see all of you interested students there! As a reminder to students that are interested in attending OHP please get your applications in as soon as possible, especially if you are interested in a program that fills up quickly. I’ll upload the photos, and have the video up soon! If any of you have any questions, just ask me via the journeys facebook page –>http://www.facebook.com/hipointjourneys , or comment on this blogpost! Again, I hope I see you all at the taste of the future, good bye!!

Drew: My Week!

Hello everyone! Last week flew by so fast. We had two hour delays due to the OGT testing. It was great to sleep in, but that’s not all that went on this week! On Monday, my whole lab went to the Regency Beauty Classic hair show in Columbus. I have pictures and some video of the show to share with you all!

YouTube Preview Image

There were a lot of different booths and stages to check out. We even got to see some of the Cosmetology State Board members! It was overall a great experience, and I had a lot of fun. As for the rest of the week, I enjoyed my to hour delays quite well! In government, we are doing a project with finances.

We use a timeline, and figure what all we want to purchase and we see how in debt or how much money we have. We got to invest in stocks and everything! In English we are continuing with the senior projects. This week, we had to write our conclusion, our introduction, and three body paragraphs as well as turn in the remainder of our note cards and our thesis statement. In lab right now, we have started learning about the theory of relaxers.

We are also practicing different hair coloring techniques. Plus, job shadowing will be here in early November and I am anxious to share my experiences of that, with all of you! Speaking of November, sophomore career days will also be here soon! All of the sophomores from the partner schools will get to check out two different labs while they are here, and will be able to see whether or not Hi-Point is for you. Of course, we hope that you do choose to come to Hi-Point! It really is a great school and  can help you with your future.

Ill go ahead and post some pictures and video of the hair show to let you all see how it was. Ill be posting later on, good bye everyone!

Career preview evening!

What is the career preview evening?! I’ve had many students ask me what this is. What I told them was, “how about you come out to Hi-Point and see what it is!”

But since most likely not everyone will be able to get out to Hi-Point on November 17th, I will be nice and tell you what it is all about. The career preview night is when sophomores from the 14 partner schools come to Hi-Point and check it out. Also, there are colleges and local restaurants that set up booths in the cafeteria and show what they have to offer.

It is great for checking out the labs that you want to be in. You will learn all about the lab in great detail and have a pretty good idea of how things work at Hi-Point. You will also be able to receive letters in the mail regarding what future events will be happening. All in all, the career preview is just a wonderful event that Hi-Point hosts. While at Hi-Point, you can get an application and turn it in to your homeschool guidance office (hint, hint).

Even if you are already enrolled at Hi-Point, you can still come and check out the colleges and what not. This year is flying by so fast, so make sure that you stop by Hi-Point on November 17th and check us out!

Here in about two weeks, my lab will be going to the beauty classic hair show in Columbus. I hope to take many pictures, and maybe some video! It was a great experience last year, so I am looking forward to it again this year! Ill have some more content up later, for now I say goodbye!

Crazy much? I think yes!

Hey! It has been so busy in the Cosmetology lab lately! Before we went on a nice Christmas break, all Cosmetology students took their mid-term exam. With all of the crazy weather, we were struggling to complete exams, but we did it! This month, all the senior Cosmetology students, including me, we will be taking our final exam by the end of the month, and those scores will be sent to the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, so we can qualify to take our test in order to become licensed by the time we graduate. I must say, that it has been a lot of hard work this year and trying to complete everything with snow delays, and cancellations. So what are we doing until finals? Studying, studying, studying! I am feeling very prepared for State Boards, and that is a huge relief! Sad to say, I have got to get back to work now. Hope everyone had a great break!

Hands-on learning!

Hey Guys =) I hope everyone was able to make it out to our Taste of the Future event!! It was fun! But anyways, Ohio Hi-Point, as a whole, offers a whole different type of learning than regular high schools. At Hi-Point, students learn a great deal with hands-on learning. Every lab has something different that pertains to their specific career technical program. In Cosmetology we offer services to the public, in Automotive Technology people can make appointments to have their car worked on, and Printing and Graphics made their own class sweatshirts this year.

Every lab learns  in a classroom and then applies it with hands-on experience in a lab. It is a wonderful way to learn quickly. For example, in my lab we were learning the basic make up application. The teacher had every student bring in their own personal make up, and we applied it to each other. We read the procedure from the book, talk about it, and then do it. If you are a hands on learner, Ohio Hi-Point is the place for you!

Explaining the Cosmetology licensing process

Hey readers!!!! If you watched the video on the Journeys site, Olivia told you that in the Cosmetology program at Ohio Hi-Point you will graduate with your license to practice cosmetology. Last year, the seniors went to take their state board test in the summer, after school was out. This year, the cosmetology department has a goal to have all of us licensed EARLY!! I am very excited to have my license and be able to work on clients outside of school.

In order to receive my license and pass the state required test, I have to understand all of the concepts that we learned in school and be able to perform them on a mannequin. I believe a relaxer is performed, a perm, a 90 degree haircut, hair color application, a basic manicure, and also we must pass a written exam. It’s super important for us to remember our sanitation training. The sanitation is simple, just very redundant. You must sanitize your hands before and after each service as well as every time you throw something away. If you drop a comb you have to get a new one. I hope by that time I have mastered all of these by the time we go to state boards in the spring!! Keep reading!! See ya!! :)

Preparing for the real world

Hey!  It’s been a while since I have blogged! Senior year if flying by so fast! It’s crazy! I am just so thankful that all the teachers at Ohio Hi-Point are so helpful through such a crazy year. I believe that Ohio Hi-Point is preparing me for the future in so many ways. My Cosmetology teachers have been helping me and the other students prepare for our Cosmetology test that we hope to take in March. I’m nervous for my test, but I feel that I will be prepared enough by then to take my it.

For my plans beyond high school, I am planning on working in a salon, and if I do decide to go onto college, I can work and also juggle school work with all of that. Ohio Hi-Point teaches many students responsibility, and organization, which will help me with going into the workforce. I love how the staff members, and teachers, help all of us prepare for the real world. I now have to go, and get some things done. Keep following my blogs and I’ll keep more posted! =]
