Skills USA Trip at the Hyatt Regency

The end of last week was fun and amazing at the Regional SkillsUSA trip. We had tons of fun getting to know people from all over Ohio. I was a voting delegate for Hi-Point and had to vote for our officers to be elected for regional office. It was time consuming and you had to really put yourself out there to be known and collect votes from other candidates. We had a certain amount of time that we had dedicated to talking to all of the other delegates and it was very interesting. After we campaigned for our officers, we had to listen to the speeches given by all of the other candidates. Afterwards, we had to go up to a room and vote for them. It was a little disappointing that none of our candidates got elected but it was a great experience for everyone.

We got to go eat at BD’s, and that place is amazing. We had to walk a couple of blocks to get to the restaurant but it was really fun, especially since we were in downtown Columbus and there was the Blue Jackets game about to start. There were a lot of people getting ready for that hockey game and they were all out around our hotel and the restaurant.

They also had a dance while we were there which was really cool because everyone was there. Unless they were wandering around the hotel. I was with some friends and we danced for a while and then we decided to go up to the room and get dressed to go to the pool. We got to have a lot of fun and we have many more trips just like this one to look forward to this year.

Come check in next week for a special blog that Micheal and I will be completing on ten secrets about Hi Point. There will be a lot of interesting things revealed. See ya next week.

Drew: My Week!

Hello everyone! Last week flew by so fast. We had two hour delays due to the OGT testing. It was great to sleep in, but that’s not all that went on this week! On Monday, my whole lab went to the Regency Beauty Classic hair show in Columbus. I have pictures and some video of the show to share with you all!

There were a lot of different booths and stages to check out. We even got to see some of the Cosmetology State Board members! It was overall a great experience, and I had a lot of fun. As for the rest of the week, I enjoyed my to hour delays quite well! In government, we are doing a project with finances.

We use a timeline, and figure what all we want to purchase and we see how in debt or how much money we have. We got to invest in stocks and everything! In English we are continuing with the senior projects. This week, we had to write our conclusion, our introduction, and three body paragraphs as well as turn in the remainder of our note cards and our thesis statement. In lab right now, we have started learning about the theory of relaxers.

We are also practicing different hair coloring techniques. Plus, job shadowing will be here in early November and I am anxious to share my experiences of that, with all of you! Speaking of November, sophomore career days will also be here soon! All of the sophomores from the partner schools will get to check out two different labs while they are here, and will be able to see whether or not Hi-Point is for you. Of course, we hope that you do choose to come to Hi-Point! It really is a great school and  can help you with your future.

Ill go ahead and post some pictures and video of the hair show to let you all see how it was. Ill be posting later on, good bye everyone!

Insight to open heart surgery

Okay, so who is interested in seeing actual surgeries?  Because last week the top four students from the health technology program were able to sit in on a surgery at Kettering Hospital and watch a live heart surgery.  No one has had an opportunity like this from our lab and it was amazing!

So our day started out that Mrs. Purcell and the students met at the school at six in the morning we then headed to Kettering, which was an hour and a half away.  When we got there we had to watch a slide show on procedures in that hospitals, we scrubbed in and then we waited for the surgeries to begin.  The first two students were able to see the opening procedure done on a quadruple by pass and another student and I got to see the opening done on arterial valve replacement.  We even got to stand at the head of the operating table about a foot away from the surgery and see everything that the doctor was doing.  Both surgeries took about five hours, which is normal for any heart surgery but could last up to eleven hours. Could you imagine being in surgery for eleven hours?!

Coming to Ohio Hi-Point brings opportunities that you can’t believe.   That opportunity of watching heart surgery came from one of the students knowing someone that could get us into surgery.  Never underestimate what Ohio Hi-Point can do for their students!

Post Conference Update

What a whirl wind of a week it has been! Portions of the teaching professions students traveled to Atlanta Georgia for our annual conference. There a little under a 1000 perspective future educators gathered. The unique opportunity arose this year for students to become the representation of the organization- to fulfill this, the association sought applicants who were willing to serve. I was one of those applications who made it through the screening process and after fulfilling the requirements…which included giving a speech in front of 844 people, running an effective campaign booth and getting voted in. I will now spend the next year serving those students who elected me. Be sure to stay tuned for the complete journey! Thanks Ohio Hi-Point for the endless opportunities to continue to grow- and build myself a stronger future.
